この昔の写真を見て、
ＭＴことマイケル・トムソンのことを思いだしていた。
彼のスタジオに通っては、
ヴーヴ・クリコなどを飲みつつ、
アートやハービー・ハンコックの難解さを学んだあとは、
おいしいイタリアン・レストランでごちそうしてくれた。

ダニー・メルハド。
元ＷＣＴサーファーである。
現在は沖縄西部の読谷で、
『ハッピー・サーフィング・オキナワ』を主宰している。
じつは肩書きとか、
履歴はどうでもいい。
輝いている人から学びたいのだ。
そのうってつけの人物がダニーだ。
沖縄にやってきて、
ダニーについて確実にわかったことがある。
それは、
「人生を一日単位で楽しんでいる。」
ということ。
カギかっこの中に句点「。」が入るのは、
それで完結していると強調したいブンガク的表現だ。
さらに書くと、
「今日（サーフィンを）楽しむこと」
ダニーのそんな生き方に感銘を受けた。
例えば、
疲れていても夕方サーフできるとなれば、
「明日はない」
とばかりにパドルアウトする。
こんな姿勢が、
ハイレベルを保つ基礎となっているのだ。
しかも４０年近くもそうやって来られる精神力と肉体がある。
はっきり言って、
全機能を備えた才能のかたまりが、
これほどまで長くサーフィンを続けてきたのだから、
その幸運とフィジカルには歴史的な偉人感すら感じる。
沖縄入りの元々は、
彼の道場に入門し、
内弟子としてやってきた。
奄美バレルで、
セッティングが疑問となり、
いろいろ考えすぎて、
迷宮に入りこんでしまっていたのだ。

減速と接水の関係も聞きたい、
フィジカルはどうなのか、
意識はどこに持っていくのか、
波の見方から全てを学びたい。
そんなことでのオキナワ入りだった。
すると、
師範は桑の実が大好物で、
熟したのを獲っては生で食べたり、
スムージーに入れてミクシングしているのだった。
もちろん内弟子の私もハーベスト・チームに入ってきた。
知り合いの農家さんの樹だ。
沖縄出身のナッキーに聞くと、
桑の実は、
たまに子どもが食べるくらいで、
ここまで集めて食べる人はあまりいないとのことだが、
どのアメリカン・チェリーよりもおいしくて、
さらには食べきれないほど獲れる。
なので、
ダニー師範は、
集めた桑の実をジップロックに入れて冷凍保存しているのだった。
それにしてもアメリカサイズな量で、
そんなことにもうれしくなった。
私は大の料理好きだと思うが、
ダニー師範も同じくらい美味には興味があり、
しかもクラシックな味を好まれる。
彼の作るフィッシュ・タコスは、
小麦粉と塩にオリオン・ビールを溶かし、
低温で白身魚をじっくりと揚げ、
刻んだキャベツ、
辛めのサルサ・ソース、
そしてマヨネーズとレモンで作ったホワイトソースをかけて、
温めたトルティーヤで巻いて食べると、
人生で最もおいしかったフィッシュ・タコスが映像を結び、
波が良かった日のメキシコに戻ったような気持ちとなる。
オーセンティックの極みだと思う。
師は、
夜明け前の暗闇を怖れず、
懐中電灯と共に行動し、
島の反対側だろうがどこでも潮の良い時間に到着する。
コーヒーとミルクを朝の燃料とし、
サーフィンは正確で、
ワイプアウトという文字はどこにも見あたらず、
そして常に笑顔で
『ハッピー・サーフィング』を体現されている。
しかも一日単位という刹那、
つまり「明日はない」という達観が日々の行動から漂ってくるのだ。
まるで宮本武蔵のような剣豪であり、
ローマ戦士のアエネーイス（Aeneis）のようだが、
師は争いや競争を好まず、
自身の過去にふれ、
「あれは生活のためだった」
そんな回想をしている。
ＷＣＴサーファーとかんたんに書くが、
このレベルで競技するためには、
ＱＳで世界１６位に入らなくてはならない。
ダニーはやはり選ばれた人だと知って、
私を呆然とされるのである。

このことをインスタグラム用に英語で書いてみた。
本来ならベンチュラ・セイジか、
長女カイラに添削してもらうのだが、
あまりにも長すぎるのと、
「なんとか意味は通じるだろう」
そんな気持ちで投稿すると、
インスタグラムのキャプション内には長すぎて収まらなかった。
ならばＭＴ箇所と、
フィッシュタコスの箇所を取り去ったのだが、
それでも多すぎてコメント欄にあふれてしまった。

MT, I remembered Michael Thomson.
After attending his studio to learn avant-garde, core art, and the esoteric nature of Herbie Hancock, he feasted on delicious food at the Italian restaurant beneath the studio.
That time MT was planning the next firing of Gatcha and MCD.
Danny Melhado.
Former WCT surfer.
Currently, he presides over “Happy Surfing Okinawa” in Yomitan, western Okinawa.
But in fact, it doesn’t matter what the title or history is.
I want to learn “important things” from people who are shining like MT mentioned above.
Danny is the perfect person for that.
After spending a few days together, I found out that he was “enjoying life on a daily basis.”
In addition, I was impressed by Danny’s way of life, “enjoying (surfing) today.”
For example, if you can surf in the evening even if you are tired, you will paddle out just saying “There is no tomorrow”.
This attitude is the basis of a high level Danny.
Moreover, he has the mental strength and body that has been doing so for more than 40 years.
To be clear, the luck and physical feel of a historic great, as a full-featured mass of talent has continued to surf.
I came to Okinawa because I wanted to be his student.
I want to hear about the setting while entering the barrel in Amami, the relationship between deceleration and water contact, how about the physical?
When I was thinking about where to bring my consciousness, I entered a labyrinth.
I wanted to learn everything from the perspective of the waves.
Then, the Guru loved mulberry fruits, and he caught ripe ones and ate them raw, or put them in smoothies and mixed them.
Of course I also became a mulberry harvest team.
According to Nacky from Okinawa, mulberry fruits are eaten only occasionally by children, and not many people collect and eat them so far, but they are more delicious than any American cherry.
I’m a big fan of cooking, but Danny is just as interested in deliciousness and prefers classic flavors.
Mix cold Orion beer with flour and salt, entangle white fish famous in Okinawa, and fry at low temperature.
Then topped with Danny ’s white sauce, spicy salsa and cabbage. Served on a warm, oven corn tortilla.
When you drink Orion beer while thinking that it is Cerveza the most delicious Beer-batterd fish tacos in my life form an image, and the wonderful days are revived with the taste.
Even if he gets drunk at night, he wakes up silently before dawn.
Not afraid of dark hours, he fuels coffee and milk, acts with flashlights, and arrives at good tides anywhere on the other side of the island.
Furthermore, it padds like a feather softly to the other side of the horizon, and arrives at the outer-reef.

The word wipeout is not found anywhere, and always smiles and embodies “Happy Surfing”.
From him, the moment of “only today” and the idea of ”there is no tomorrow” drift from daily activities.
It’s like a samurai like Miyamoto Musashi, like a Roman warrior Aeneis. But he doesn’t like conflict or competition at all, and his own past is reminiscent of “that was for life.”
However, in order to compete in WCT, he must be in the 16th place in the world in the second league called QS.
Moreover, this is a one-year aggregated result.
When I heard about the strategy and things at that time, he didn’t want to say that he was just surfing.
In summary, the guru was still the chosen person, the Jedi knight. I just want to learn a lot.
