ここには霊石がある。
There is a spirit stone here.
その石に手を合わせてからサーフすると、
不思議と良い波がやってきた。
When I surfed after putting my hands on the stone,
a strangely good wave came.
調子に乗ってはいけないと気を引き締めたが、
悪いことは何も起こらず、
「地の神というのは確かにいる」
と感じたことをこの画像から思い出した。
I tightened my mind not to get in the way,
but this image reminded me that nothing bad happened and I felt that
“the god of the earth is certainly there.”
この場合の神というのは、
アニミズムの神であり、
きっと古来から人間が持つ尊敬とか畏怖みたいなものだろうか。
The god in this case is the god of animism,
and is it something like the respect or awe that humans have had since ancient times?
とにかくこの日も感動的な日だった。
I was impressed on this day as well.

テイクオフの精度が向上したと感じていたが、
この日は調子が悪かった。
I felt that the accuracy of the takeoff had improved,
but I wasn’t feeling well that day.
ダニー師範が撮ってくれたこの写真を見ると、
パドル回数が少なかったようで、
この位置からテイクオフしていた。
Looking at the picture taken by Master Danny,
I was in the waves from this position.
Not enough paddling.
この理由を考えてみるといくつかあった。
Considering the reason for this, there were several.
一番の大きな理由は、
波数が極端に少なかった中で奇跡的な良波がやってきて、
ちょうど自分の順番だったから焦ってしまったのだろう。
The biggest reason is that the number of waves is extremely low,
and in the meantime,
a miraculous good wave came and I was impatient because it was just my turn.
もうひとつは、
ジャイアンとガラさんという友人たちが来ていたので、
うれしくて逸ってしまったのだろう。
The other was that my friends,
Gian Toshi and Gala san were there,
so I was happy and impatient.

ガラさんは公平でおおらかな人だ。
そして私たちの指導者であるラカ法王も横山泰介さんもよくご存知なのと、
私が大好きな鎌倉界隈のことをよく知っているので話していて楽しい。
そしてサーフィンを本当にわかってらっしゃるし、
他のサーファーもよく観察されていることを学ばさせていただいた。

誰かと一緒に波に乗るのは、
音楽と同じようにハーモニーだと思う。
I think riding the waves with someone is just as harmonious as music.
前者がどう動くか、
波をどう読んでいるかを考え、
さらには波フェイスのスペースと、
今後の展開を予測して滑る。
Think about how other surfers move,
how they read the waves,
and even anticipate the space of the wave face and future developments.
なかなか楽しいし、
こういうロングボード波ならば、
一緒に８人くらい乗れるものでもある。
It’s a lot of fun,
and with this kind of longboard wave,
about eight people can ride together.
最近のサーフィンブームによる混雑時ですら、
このやり方ならば、
多くの人がハッピーサーフィンを体現できるのだろう。
Even during times of congestion due to the recent surfing boom,
many people will be able to embody happy surfing this way.
でも日本では、
１９８０年代に浸透した
『ワンマン・ワンウェーブ』というルール厳守により、
私がそう思っていても、
謝られたり、
怒られたりする。
Even if I think so, in many places in Japan,
someone apologizes or gets angry because of the strict adherence to the rules-
-that permeated the 1980s called “one-man one-wave.”
一方向の波ならばわかるが、
こんな日は緩慢斜面でクネクネするだけなので、
そんな画一的なルールを適用すべきではないと感じた。
I know if it’s a one-way wave,
but on a day like this,
I just squeeze on a slow slope,
so I felt that such a uniform rule should not be applied.
そんなことを考えながら奥武島ビーチに行くと、
『コロナ対策で遊泳禁止』とたくさんの張り紙がしてあり、
思考停止の役人たちが通達を受けた張り紙により、
こんな人気がないビーチまでも閉鎖していた。
When I went to O-jima Beach in this way,
there were a lot of posters saying
“Swimming is prohibited due to Covid-19 measures”
Again,
thought-stopping officials have been notified
that even such an unpopular beach has been closed.
すると、
地元の子どもたちがたくさんやってきて、
橋から飛び込んで泳いでいるのを見て、
さすが沖縄の子どもたちは、
ことの本質をわかっているのだと知ってうれしくなった。
Then, when I saw a lot of local children jumping from the bridge and swimming,
I was happy that they knew the essence. Keep happy surfing!
